WHERE: 116 Lygon Street, Brunswick East, VIC 3057 (latitude 37° 46' 40.86"S; longitude 144° 58' 13.74"E )

Join us on Tuesday, 20th June 2017 at Rumi Restaurant, 7pm

Come join us for a Middle-Eastern banquet on World Refugee Day as we reflect on our most recent and continually evolving project ‘The Voiceless Journeys’, an intimate portrait of people who have left their countries as a result of internal problems or conflicts to make their life in Australia; people who have positively shaped our communities.

Ondru is a non-profit humanitarian organisation run excusively by volunteers. Ondru utilises the powerful medium of art to provoke thought, to raise awareness and to inspire positive social change. Through its large scale projects Ondru looks to create art that provides a voice to the tenderness of the human condition and gives light to issues that exist in the dark.

The goal of this fundraiser is to bring in some much needed operating funds as well as to find potential partners for our future projects. It promises to be a great night with fantastic food and a very interesting keynote speaker, Khadija Gbla followed by a Q & A session with Khadija and the founder and artistic director of Ondru, desh Balasubramaniam.

A refugee from war-torn Sierra Leone; a survivor of female genital mutilation; a victim of intense racism. Khadija shares her powerful story with the wish to inspire others to accept the differences in our multicultural society and to give women, youth and minority groups a voice.

Khadija’s social work has won her many awards: the Australia Day Young Citizen Award (2008), Young Achiever of the Year Award (2009), Young African Australian of the Year (2011) - to name just a few. In 2013 Amnesty International declared Khadija a Human Rights Activist to watch.
