Voiceless Journeys Book

To endure time, Ondru has created the Voiceless Journeys Book.

Voiceless Journeys Project

Voiceless Journeys is an attempt to build a sense of community

with greater understanding of each other through the medium of art.

Voiceless Journeys is an art project that aims to celebrate the cultural diversity and raise awareness about the journey, struggle, survival and achievements of people from diverse backgrounds. The focus was on people who had left their countries as a result of internal problems or conflicts to make their life in Australia; people who positively shape our communities.

Diverse groups of people co-exist in Australia but they do not necessarily enjoy a sense of community. There exists a challenge to build a sense of community, which opposes racism, xenophobia and oppression. Whilst acknowledging that every community is unique and changeable, interaction is the key to social change, a central force to building a community that is inclusive of all.

Voiceless Journeys Book

Voiceless Journeys is our most significant body of work to date expressing the silent stories of 101 people who, through conflict or necessity, left their countries to make a new life in Australia. Initially, large-scale Installations of these images on the streets of Melbourne brought life to this project. Now the Voiceless Journeys book has been produced to create a greater understanding of each other and build a sense of community.

The book’s spine resembles the original archive system of storing records as well as symbolising the stripping away of covers and revealing the human stories of great courage and resilience inside. The book is a reflection upon our society and has significantly contributed to empowering many who participated in the project.

Eduard P. says:

“I was initially reluctant to participate in the project, but later I was stunned by the large photograph of myself on the street. It lifted me up to feel that my story matters. People thought I was famous, but I’m not famous…I was understood and respected for what I had gone through…it meant a lot to me.”

“I came here with just two suitcases and now I have made a life. Music and art has really helped me a lot. I struggled with depression for some time before. Now I look to relax my soul with music and art and these creative things.”
