Shirtless Window

Shirtless Window is a short experimental film that expresses the emotional conflict of an artist.

Synopsis

Shirtless Window is a short film that expresses the emotions of giving life to art, embodying the conflict within the artist as well as between society and the artist. During the creative process, the artist is torn between the idea and the work he or she is creating. This often leads to questions such as 'Am I being true to my idea?' and 'Have I created what I wanted to express?' The artist often struggles between the intention and the physical artwork. While this internal conflict persists there is also the presence of external conflict between the artist and society. This may relate to social and political struggle of the artist in relating to wider society, the economic challenge of maintaining an income and also dealing with the day-to-day ups and downs of ordinary life.

This work began as a personal poem, an expression the writer was feeling at a specific moment in life. Ideas for art and expression come in the midst of living life, and not while agonising over at a writer's desk. The poem was later adapted to film.

Poetry

Shirtless Window

3:59am. It is not just my thoughts who wander the streets at the mindless hours of the night. Lying down, almost dead of reality and facing the one-footed moon in the park, the running river, scars of the alleyways, her angry face, her loveless breasts and her bent over barbwire fence. Feeding the horses at the Collingwood Farm at 2am or was it 3? There, by the fall of water, with a bottle of red wine, the puff of life and a whole lot of love in a bowl and loneliness in a wooden box, a dried gum leaf―the bookmark. Spitting out the rules, the blackboard and the blistered footwear. The ebony of the skin; the sable worn in mourning. A life of one who wishes to express…a nobody...almost dressed in nakedness...a shirtless window…the uncaressed left breast…this nobody…how he lives…with too many dots…that continue…
